: Why we relocated state airport to Ede — Osun govt By Mr. Kabiru Adisa FCA

The Osun State Government’s decision to relocate the state airport project from Ido-Osun to Ede has drawn significant criticism, as many stakeholders question the necessity and implications of such a move. The government cites technical inadequacies at the Ido-Osun site as the main justification, these challenges, many argue, could be resolved through thoughtful upgrades rather than an expensive and potentially disruptive relocation.

The Ido-Osun site has been the focus of years of investment and planning, with substantial progress made in the development of infrastructure such as a terminal building, control tower, and fire and rescue facilities. Abandoning these efforts in favor of starting anew at Ede risks wasting these investments and raises concerns about fiscal responsibility in managing public resources.

The technical issues identified, such as the runway's length and the proximity of settlements and schools, are not insurmountable. Runway extensions, relocation of nearby facilities, and realignment of existing infrastructure are standard practices in aviation development globally. These solutions would not only address the cited deficiencies but also preserve the substantial financial and structural groundwork already laid at Ido-Osun.

Relocating the airport project also raises questions about equity and the social contract with the Ido-Osun community. This community has long looked forward to the socio-economic transformation the project would bring. Moving the project elsewhere risks fostering discontent and undermining the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable development.

Moreover, the environmental and social costs of relocating to Ede cannot be ignored. The clearing of new land, displacement of communities, and ecological disruption that would accompany this move represent significant challenges that demand careful consideration.

Rather than pursuing a costly relocation, a phased upgrade of the Ido-Osun site presents a viable and resource-efficient alternative. Addressing technical deficiencies with expert-driven solutions and leveraging the existing investments would ensure compliance with international standards without straining state resources further.

I urge the Osun State Government to reconsider this decision and focus on maximizing resource efficiency, fostering sustainable development, and respecting the aspirations of the Ido-Osun community. This project offers a vital opportunity to demonstrate responsible governance, balanced growth, and a firm commitment to the welfare of all Osun State residents.
This is a moment for reflection and bold, inclusive leadership.
