Health Series XII: Ahead Mental Health Day: What we need

By Miriam Ike Nwaneka, Ibadan.

Dear Faithful Readers,

As we approach World Mental Health Day on October 10th, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our well-being and discuss the importance of balance at work. Today’s topic, "One Size Doesn't Fit All: Knowing When to Take a Break at Work," is both timely and essential in our fast-paced world, where the pressure to overachieve can lead to burnout. But here’s the thing—what works for others may not necessarily work for you, and trying to keep up without knowing when to pause can have serious repercussions.

Many of us have been there—watching colleagues power through tasks with seemingly endless energy, never showing signs of fatigue. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison, but we need to remember: that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to handling work stress. Trying to match others’ pace without recognizing your own limits can lead to exhaustion, frustration, and health risks.

Why is it important to take breaks?

Your body has natural limits, and ignoring the signs of fatigue or stress can lead to dangerous consequences like fainting, falling, or, in extreme cases, heart attacks. When you push yourself too far, you’re not only risking burnout, but you’re also setting the stage for chronic health problems like high blood pressure, migraines, and a weakened immune system.

In Nigeria, where the work culture often glorifies overworking, many feel the pressure to keep going even when their bodies scream for rest. Over time, this can take a heavy toll, particularly on mental health. Overworking without proper breaks leads to anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, which diminish productivity and overall well-being.

The Trap of Comparison: How Constant Comparison Undermines Our Well-being

In today's digital world, we are constantly bombarded with glimpses into the lives of others through social media and societal pressures. This habit of comparing ourselves to others often referred to as "comparison," significantly impacts mental health, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.

While a little comparison is natural and can motivate us, excessive comparison often leads to:

  1. Diminished self-worth: Constantly measuring ourselves against others makes us feel inadequate.

  2. Increased anxiety and stress: The pressure to "keep up" can feel overwhelming, resulting in chronic stress.

  3. Unrealistic expectations: Trying to match someone else's journey can lead to unattainable goals.

  4. Overlooking personal growth: Focusing too much on others blinds us to our own achievements.

  5. Reduced gratitude: Comparison makes it easy to overlook the blessings in our lives.

The rise of social media has amplified this trap. We often compare ourselves to others' "highlight reels"—their best moments—while forgetting that life is more complex than what we see online. This leads to feelings of inadequacy, FOMO (fear of missing out), and dissatisfaction in our careers, bodies, or relationships.

What can you do to manage your workload without burning out?

  1. Recognize the signs of burnout early: If you're increasingly tired, irritable, or unable to focus, these are red flags.

  2. Practice small, regular breaks: A 10-minute walk or a few minutes of mindfulness can recharge your energy and clear your mind.

  3. Embrace self-compassion: Needing a break doesn’t mean you’re weak; it shows wisdom in knowing your limits.

  4. Create a balance that works for you: Everyone is different. Respect your body’s natural rhythm and design a work-rest routine that suits you, not someone else.

Way Forward: Setting Boundaries for a Healthier Work Life

As we prepare for World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to making positive changes that protect our mental health and increase productivity. Here are some strategies to set healthier boundaries at work:

  • Set boundaries: Learn to say "no" when overwhelmed. Not every task needs to be done immediately.

  • Prioritize self-care: Incorporate activities that help you unwind—whether it’s exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

  • Seek professional help: Don’t hesitate to consult a mental health professional if you're struggling with work-related stress or anxiety.

  • Limit social media usage: Reducing time on platforms that fuel comparison can significantly lower stress and improve self-esteem.

Breaking Free from the Comparison Trap

To overcome the negative effects of comparison, try these strategies:

  1. Practice mindfulness: Focus on your present experience without comparing it to others.

  2. Set personal goals: Define success based on your values and aspirations, not someone else’s achievements.

  3. Celebrate others' successes: Turn envy into genuine joy for others' progress.

  4. Recognize your unique journey: Everyone’s path is different. The only person you should compare yourself to is the person you were yesterday.

Final Thoughts

The temptation to push beyond our limits is ever-present in our world today, but we must remember that one size doesn't fit all. Prioritizing your mental health by knowing when to take breaks will not only improve your well-being but also your long-term productivity. As World Mental Health Day approaches, let this serve as a reminder that taking care of your mind is just as important as excelling at work.

Stay mindful, listen to your body, and never feel guilty for taking the rest you need. True success comes when both your mind and body are in harmony, and your journey is your own.
