The notion that having a majority of State Governors automatically guarantees presidential victory is not only politically simplistic, but historically incorrect.
Nigeria’s electoral history has consistently shown that the will of the people supersedes political structures when it truly matters.
A clear example is the 2015 presidential election. At that time, 22 sitting Governors openly endorsed and campaigned for the re-election of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the PDP.
Yet, despite this overwhelming gubernatorial support, he lost to General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC by over 2.5 million votes. This was a decisive statement by the electorate that governors do not own the people’s mandate.
Fast forward to 2023, the APC controlled 22 States, yet the party only won in a fraction of those states. Peter Obi, without a single Governor behind him, won 11 states including the Federal Capital Territory . Atiku Abubakar also won in several APC-controlled states. Even in Lagos — a state widely regarded as APC’s political fortress — the ruling party lost the presidential election to Labour Party.
Relying solely on governors is like putting all hope in one man to determine the destiny of millions. Political tables can turn overnight, and voters can make last-minute decisions that override party structures.
We have also seen some governors switch parties purely for personal re-election ambitions, forgetting that electorates are more politically conscious and decisive today than ever before.
The reality is that the 2027 presidential election will not be determined by the movement of governors, but by the mood of the nation, the performance of leadership, and the collective will of the Nigerian people. Governors may miscalculate, and those banking on their influence may be disappointed.
In the end, it is God and the general masses, not political office holders, who will determine Nigeria’s future at the polls.
Hon. Kazeem Alimi, PDP Stalwart,
Ibadan North Local Government.
