Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has promised to provide political leadership, budgetary support, and executive backing to prevent gender-based violence (GBV).

He made this assurance while hosting representatives of the Nigerian Governor's Spouse Forum, led by his wife, Tamunomini Makinde, on an advocacy visit.

The 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 themed “𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞“ held at the Secretariat, Ibadan, on Thursday.

Makinde emphasized his commitment to protecting women and girls, sharing a personal anecdote about family planning and gender norms. He pledged to work with the state House of Assembly to ensure adequate budgetary allocation for GBV prevention and response mechanisms.

In her contribution, Oyo State governor's wife, Mrs. Tamunomini Makinde stressed that GBV is a development challenge, governance issue, and economic drain, urging the state government to prioritize prevention and provide funding for response mechanisms.

The visit was part of an initiative by the Nigerian Governor's Spouse Forum and Ford Foundation to strengthen legislative ownership of GBV prevention in Oyo State.
