Nigerian athletes have secured 373 medals in global competitions in 2025, a achievement President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attributes to sports reforms.

The President praised Team Nigeria's performance, citing victories by individual champions, female football and basketball teams, and the Super Eagles' bronze medal at AFCON 2025.

"Sports remains one of Nigeria's strongest national brands, inspiring collective pride," President Tinubu said.

The administration has scrapped the Sports Ministry and transferred its functions to the National Sports Commission to cut costs and reposition sports.

Systemic weaknesses had hindered Nigeria's sporting potential, but President Tinubu has approved new funding frameworks for sports, including annual budgetary provisions for infrastructure and international competitions.

"Nigerian athletes deserve certainty, not excuses," he stated.

Reforms aim to position sports as a catalyst for job creation, tourism, and investment, with a focus on elite athlete development and grassroots participation.

"The future of Nigerian sports will be planned, properly funded, and competitive," President Tinubu said.
