Two socio-political associations, Egbẹ́ Àjọṣepọ̀ Fún Ìtẹsiwájú Gbogbo Wa and G22 Renewed, have called for fairness and inclusive governance in Oyo State, ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The group advocated for a region-to-region rotation of the governorship, starting with Òkèògùn, citing that the region has never produced a governor since the state's creation, thereby hindering its development.
"Governorship must move out of Ìbàdàn in 2027 and be ceded to any of the marginalized zones — Òkèògùn, Ọ̀yọ́, Ìbàràpá or Ògbómọ̀ṣọ́ — as a bold step towards equity," the group stated.
The associations noted that power rotation is practised in several states in Nigeria including Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, and Edo, promoting socio-economic stability.
Across Nigeria, states have demonstrated that political power rotation is not only possible but stabilising:
"Ògùn State: Two senatorial districts have produced governors at different times — Ijebu and Egba with Yewa/Awori also requesting for power rotation. Ọ̀ṣun State: Governorship has rotated between Osun East, Osun Central and Osun West in various administrations."
"Lagos State: Governorship has alternated largely within Lagos West and Lagos East, with governance structures promoting inclusivity. Oǹdó State: Power has shifted among the three senatorial districts over the years."
"Èkìtì State: Governorship has moved across zones, strengthening unity.
Edo, Delta, Kwara and Kogi States have adopted deliberate power-balancing arrangements that foster stability and broad representation."
"If these states — many of which look up to Ọ̀yọ́ as the historical cradle of Yorùbá political civilisation — can embrace rotational justice, Ọ̀yọ́ State cannot remain the exception.", it noted.
The group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to support its quest for the governorship in 2027, emphasizing that it's a call for balance, equity, and fairness, against division and regional rivalry.
The group congratulated Oyo State's federal appointees, including Chief Waheed Adelabu, Minister of Power; Chief Florence Abiola Ajimobi, Ambassador; Senator Teslim Folarin, National Co-ordinator of 351 Wards Mobilisation Structure; and Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, Chairman, National Tax Policy Review Committee, praising their experience, competence, and leadership.
The group described the the appointments as a reflection of the Federal Government's commitment to national development, urging the government to address the long-standing imbalance in Oyo State's leadership, which will enable fairness and unity among all regions.
