As the People's Democratic Party is focusing on rebuilding its structures and restoring internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections, the chieftain of the Party, Seyi Makinde has said he would not be moved by some comments made about the Party's National Convention slated for November 15 and 16, 2025 in Ibadan, by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike early this week on a national television.
This formed part of discussion at the Southern Zoning Committee Consultative Meeting held at Legend Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday.
Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde emphasized on the need to strengthen the party before considering presidential candidates, stating, "We need to have a party first before you start talking about presidential candidates. If we don’t have a party, anything you are trying to do will fall flat.", he said.
He noted that despite challenges, the PDP remains a strong political force, as evidenced by its performance in recent elections, adding that in 12 states where elections were held, the PDP came second in most of them, indicating its continued relevance and potential to regain the confidence of Nigerians.
The Lagos Summit is a precursor to the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where critical decisions will be made regarding the party's future direction, leadership structure, and strategy.
The NEC meeting is expected to address key issues including the internal reforms and strategic planning for the 2027 general elections.
The NEC will review zoning arrangements and candidate distribution for states and offices, while efforts will be made to resolve internal disputes and project unity within the party.
Meanwhile, the PDP's National Convention Committee has been working towards organizing a national elective convention scheduled for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
Present included Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Former Senate President and Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara and Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Dr Ifeanyi Ossai, among others.
