Honouring Excellence Beyond Politics: Governor Makinde’s Sincere Tribute to Prince Akinremi

The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has been drawn to yet another baseless and politically motivated statement from the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawale Sadare, seeking to tarnish the image of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, over the honour done to the late Hon. Prince Olaide Akinremi Jagaban.
Let it be clearly stated that Governor Makinde will never play politics with the death of Prince Akinremi. The naming of the estate after him is not a gimmick or political cover-up, but a sincere recognition of his outstanding contributions to Ibadan North and Oyo State at large. Even the deaf and blind can testify to the remarkable performance of the late Akinremi — a standard far above the typical representation of APC lawmakers in the National Assembly.
It was precisely these exceptional qualities that forged the cordial relationship between Governor Makinde and the late Akinremi, long before his passing. Governor Makinde is a leader who does not indulge in politics of bitterness or blind partisanship; rather, he celebrates excellence wherever it is found.
For the records, the PDP, under Governor Makinde’s leadership, shouldered significant responsibilities in honouring the late Akinremi — from his burial arrangements to the 8th-day Fidau prayers, where the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, publicly announced the naming of the estate in his memory. At that event, over 70% of attendees were PDP members, underscoring the depth of respect and affection that transcended party lines. Even at his one-year remembrance prayer on 10th July this year at Pentonrise, the atmosphere remained one of unity and honour.
It is no secret that the APC as a party had a history of hostility towards Prince Akinremi, both in life and in death. In contrast, the PDP recognized his sterling performance and felt it only right to immortalize his name. Nothing will stop His Excellency from honouring any individual who has served the people well, irrespective of political affiliation.
Rather than fabricating tales about a “land scam,” Mr. Sadare and the Oyo APC should focus on putting their house in order. Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to fairness, good governance, and acknowledging excellence wherever it is found — whether in the PDP, APC, or beyond
