JUNE 12 & DEMOCRATIC JUSTICE|| Michael Angel-Folorunso

By

Thirty Two years ago, some unpatriotic and evil forces conspired to annul the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election won by Chief Mashood Abiola (8.3 million votes against his rival Alhaji Bashir Tofa, about 5 million, on the platforms of the Social Democratic Party and National Republican Convention in that order.

On June 11, 1994, President-elect Abiola declared himself the President. What could have happened if Chief Abiola had  decided to employ violence to reclaim his crushed mandate?

The toxic military regime of Babangida, who 32 years later yielded to the forces of the truth by affirming the winner of the June 12 election.

We salute former President Muhamadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria, and conferring the highest title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on the slain Chief Abiola.

NEC Chairman Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, who supervised the elections should also be honoured.

The wicked elements who carried out the conspiracy to pollute the river of justice be punished, and their names be registered in the hall of shame.

We demand that the remaining votes from Taraba  be announced and formally declared the results for the sake of history.
There is no alternative to democracy. Current nauseating defections should be halted.

Party system should fly ideological flags rather than fluidity. Judicial system should be insulated from partisan politics.

Electoral reforms: e-voting should be considered for future elections. Rule of law should be adhered to strictly.

Post-election litigation duration should be reduced, as well as demonetise political democracy. Security and peace should be democratized. Let us reset Nigeria for effect.
