The Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, has proposed that the Alaafin of Oyo be given a permanent presidential seat in the Council of Obas and Chiefs.

This proposal is part of the ongoing amendments to the Council of Obas and Chiefs law, aimed at restoring historical precedence and ensuring a clear leadership structure within the Council.

Speaking during a plenary session, Oyekola suggested that the Alaafin be recognized as the permanent president, while the Olubadan of Ibadanland and Soun of Ogbomoso serve as rotational chairmen.

This, he said, would bring Oyo State in line with other Yoruba states, such as Osun and Lagos, where monarchs like the Ooni of Ife have been elevated to presidential positions.

The bill has passed its second reading and is now before the Standing House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours for further review.

A delegation of council elders recently visited the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, to express support for the amendments, which have been pending for over 14 years.

Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, representing Atiba State Constituency, chairs several key committees, including serving as Vice Chairman of the Finance, Appropriation, and State Economic Planning Committee.

His proposal reflects the Assembly's efforts to strengthen traditional institutions and promote stability in Oyo State

Recall, the proposed amendment aims to stabilize the Traditional System; By establishing a clear leadership structure, the Council can function more effectively.

Prevent Administrative Uncertainties; a well-defined hierarchy would reduce potential conflicts and ensure smoother operations and foster respect for the Institution: A more structured and organized Council would enhance its reputation and influence.
