A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Olorunpoto Rahaman, has urged for clear language in the proposed Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendment) Bill, 2025, to reflect the Alaafin of Oyo's traditional status as the Permanent Chairman and Presiding Officer.
During the bill's second reading, Rahaman expressed concerns over the term "concurrent chairmen," warning it could lead to confusion and controversy among traditional rulers. "The law must clearly state that the Alaafin is the Permanent Chairman," he emphasized.
The lawmaker also advocated for an additional slot for the Oyo zone in the Council's composition, citing its historical significance and multiple revered traditional institutions. "Oyo deserves enhanced representation," he said.
Rahaman stressed the need for the amendment to reflect cultural integrity, historical justice, and balanced representation for all regions in the state.
The bill aims to restructure the Council of Obas and Chiefs, with the lawmaker's input expected to shape the final legislation.
