Is Tinubu serious about waging war on terror in Nigeria? Dr. Michael Angel-Folorunsho

One of the challenges of security in Nigeria is the easy access to weapons by the non-state armed groups, like killer herdsmen,  terrorists and thugs.

We can say that in spite of the mild war on terror in Nigeria since 2009, nothing concrete has been done to address the real causes.

The security forces had engaged terrorists on their own and by forming global alliance with some West African countries.

Though, Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, claimed that no fewer than 13,500 terrorists had been killed under the Tinubu government. He would see that as a plus in fighting terror.

In contrast, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state, the breeding ground of  the Boko Haram terror group, recently called on the federal government to help so that Marte would not fall into the hand of terrorists.
War on terror is seriously politicized  in Nigeria, thus making all the previous governments' efforts futile.

Terrorism is now an instrument of electoral politics in Nigeria. Once a government is not wanted, the terror financiers together with their international allies would spike it up to rubbish the image of the incumbent in order to get them out of power.
We need to take some critical decisions to root out terrorism from Nigeria.

* Legislation ---- ban open grazing outright in Nigeria. It's a veritable tool of terrorism spike.
* Block easy access to weapons in Nigeria, compel the herdsmen carrying automatic weapons to submit them, and give them incentives.
* Conflict sensitivity should be inculcated in the citizens.
* Scrap the policy of one nation two laws in Nigeria
* Set up a peace corps to engage in peacebuilding nationwide.
* Form Border Security and Intelligence Agency, leave not our border in the hands of Immigration in the Age of Terror.
* Form civil-military-police curriculum for understanding how to manage national and human security in a Digital Age.
* Prioritize human security along with national security.
* Purge the security forces of spies who are rendering unpatriotic services to the country.
* Multi-level policing is urgently needed. Regional army should be established to complement the efforts of the national army.
* Strategic communications should be employed to tackle insecurities.
* Good governance must be carried out by the people in power to benefit the people.
* Proper prosecution of the arrested non-state armed groups on genocide mission infiltrating Plateau, Benue and other states

If we fail to implement the suggestions above, we stand the risk of  sporadic guerrilla warfare likely to mushroom in view of the regrettable failure of the current security forces to fulfill their constitutional  obligations to the letter capable of countering  the incessant attacks of terrorists in charge of the governed  and ungoverned spaces in Nigeria.
