World Egungun Day: Oyo State aims UNESCO Enlistment-Tourism Boss, Dr. Olatunbosun

Oyo state government has reiterated its commitment to the promotion of cultural values through tourism orientation.

The commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the state, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun made this known while addressing the state correspondents on Tuesday ahead of the maiden edition of World Egungun Day slated for Thursday 11th July, 2024 at Race Course,Lekan Salami Adamasingba Stadium.

Dr. Olatunbosun noted that the state has succeeded in the promotion of Sango which has enabled its enlistment by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, in the year 2023.

He maintained that the festival would enable the world to further draw closer to the state as the mysteries around masquerades be learned without stress.

The maiden edition tagged, " Our culture, our heritage", the commissioner said the day would feature cultural display from over 200 registered masqueraders , talent hunt and promotion of native food's splendour to the outside world.

" There will be a lot of varieties at the maiden World Egungun Day in Oyo State. We have had over 200 registered interested groups in conjunction with the Ibadan Cultural Organization, CCII for officiality and monitoring. The day will see talent hunts of musicians, especially from an Oke-Ogun practising Apala musician, after late Ayinla Omowura. The local foods will be the delicacies; amala, fried beans, bean soup, and solid corn."

The commissioner added that there only award presentation would go posthumously to Late Fuji Icon and Ibadan indigene, Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, through his children who shall be adopted forthe day.

Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun assured of maximum security at the event, while the focus is to attract enlistment by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural organization, UNESCO, through consistency for more than three years in succession and make Oyo State a pacesetter for culture and tradition promotion.

" If we are able to consistently observe the Egungun Festival in Oyo State, it is belief the UNESCO will adopt it as Sango Festival was adopted. Thus, since no evidence of Egungun festival in the world yet, then, Oyo state will become a point of reference to anystate, country, interested"

"Brazillians are ready to partner withbthe state in respect of Egungun Festival for enhancement of its Tourism and culture from after this first outing", he said. 

Meanwhile, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun while seeking more collaboration with the elders and chieftains of masquerades' tradition, called the intending masqueraders to stay clear of weapon usage during and after display, as errings will be made to face the wrath of the law.

The keynote lecturer is the Araba Of Osogbo land, Araba Ifayemi Elebuibon.

Present at the media parley included the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Pastor Sulaimon Olanrewaju, permanent secretary of Tourism Ministry, Mr Jacob, Chairman, Oloje of Oyo State, Chief Bamidele Ojebode, Chairman, Alagbaa of Ibadan land, members of various Masquerades, among others.
