Breaking: Oyo Government suspends ongoing 2024 BECE, shuts schools indefinitely

Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abdulsoliu Adelabu has directed indefinite suspension of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE.

Speaking with newsmen,  the Registrar, Exams, Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Mr Johnson Awodeji, on behalf of the Commissioner on Wednesday Evening noted that the directive came owing to the planned nationwide protest billed for Thursday 1st August, 2024.

The Commissioner noted that the directive was to enable safety of every student, and pupil in the state before, during and after the planned protest.

While assuring the continuity of the ongoing BECE in its due course, the Commissioner directed all principals, headteachers, and teachers to circulate the information as quickly as possible as no school in the state should open until further notice.

" We sincerely present a apology for any inconvenience this information could bring. The essence is to enable the safety of lives and properties during and after the planned protest billed to commence on August 1st 2024 across the country. In the light of this, it becomes very urgently necessary for the government of Oyo state under His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, FNSE, DSC, GSSR to announce an indefinite suspension to the ongoing 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE across the thirty three (33) local government areas of the state, until further notice, while all schools remain close immediately from Wednesday 31st July, 2024. We urge principals, head teachers and other education stakeholders to co-operate.", the Commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the state government assured of its continued safety mechanisms of lives of properties, urging parents and guardians to keep their wards at their custody.

Recall, the Basic Education Certificate Examination commenced on Monday 22nd July, 2024 and expected to end on Thursday 1st August, 2024 with Hausa,Igbo and Arabic.
