Oyo govt. appeals striking nurses to end strike

The Chairman of Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Akin Fagbemi has appealed to the striking National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Oyo State Chapter, to call off its strike in the interest of the people of the state.
The appeal was made known during an interview with the chairman in his office at the State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan on Friday.
The Chairman said the demands of the striking nurses are largely administrative, and are within the power of the state government to do so.
He added that His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, has given his directives in respect to their demands.
The key areas in the demands of the striking nurses is the issues of recruitment and it will be recalled that in the year 2020 government recruited health workers in the state and they have given a directives to replace if there are vacancies within the board.
He added that the advert for the recruitment has been in the public to recruit competent hand and those who can fit into different categories vis- a- vis doctors,nurses, midwives, pharmacist, physiotherapists and all relevant areas within the Board as recommended.
The Chairman, however, appealed to the striking nurses to also reconsider calling off the strike in the interest of the public because some of the steps taken so far will be in their own interest and in the interest of the state government.
The Dr. Fagbemi said he had been speaking with the striking Union's Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Dr Samuel Adeyemi, so as to note some positive steps taken so far by the state government.
Dr. Fagbemi also stressed that the recruitment of health care workers in the state will be made a continuous process, noting that by the end of the year, the Board will still look at the gap with the hospitals and do the needful.
