2024 Sickle Cell Day: Fund sickle cell sensitization in Nigeria - Oyo Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal
As the world marks 2024 International Sickle Cell Day, stakeholders have called on government to establish law, policies and severe penalties that will prevent spread of sickle cell through marriage.
The call was made at an event organized by Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin to commemorate 33rd Remembrance his late father, Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin held at the Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital, Ibadan on Wednesday.
In his welcome address, Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin who charged stakeholders to come up with policies that will reduce economic burden on families of the patients, said the gathering was to raise awareness, provide drugs and empowered sickle cell patients.
Honourable Ogundoyin described his late father as a fearless, courageous, and tenacious fighter who fought Sickle cell disease until his death on June 18, 1991 at age 51.
In his remark, Oyo State Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, said for people to have proper knowledge of the deadly disease there should be constant awareness and sensitization.
Some of the sickle cell warriors, called for skill acquisition, financial, empowerment, medical support, awareness and sensitization from governments and non government organizations to ameliorate their challenges and spread of the disease.
Present at the event included members of Oyo state House of Assembly, traditional rulers, religious leaders, experts from non-governmental organizations, students from various secondary schools and top officials of the state government.
